Thrift Shop Music Video Task

We were set the task of creating a music video to a section of the song Thrift Shop in a particular style. We chose performance, so we had to create our section of the music video which at a later date would be combined with the other sections (using different styles). This was to show us the key conventions of a music video in production and post production, for example having lots of close ups of the artist and cutting to the beat and to also show us a range of styles and how the conventions vary.

First, we made a shooting script (see below), with precise timings of shots and explained what the shot would be, e.g the camera angle, the action, the movement within the shot. This is more time consuming when making a music video as you need to be able to cut to the beat when editing, so we wanted to be accurate with the timings where we would make a cut.

For filming and editing purposes we had some key phrases that we had on post it notes on our mac to help us keep to the conventions of music videos and performance:

  • must cut on beat
  • camera cannot be static
  • stick to shooting script timings and play music when filming shots
  • lots of close ups so it can be identified as a performance style video

We had to edit our music video section on Final Cut which we have not used much before, meaning the editing process was more time consuming as we were learning how to use the software and get more familiar with it. The attached screenshots show our timeline and the tools we used to cut the shots.
